Isn't it enough for an employer to pay their employees a salary and provide them with a job? - No, not at all. As an employer, it is important nowadays to show appreciation to your employees and to offer a pleasant company culture, because after all, they spend most of their day at work. But why? And what impact can team events, feedback conversations, and small gifts have? In this blog post, we will answer these questions and show you how we create a great working environment for our employees.
Why is appreciation important in the team?
One might think that as a small start-up consisting almost entirely of student workers, we focus on work. Team events, workshops, or company parties are only introduced with time when the company grows and more employees join. However, we at SelectCode take a different approach:
Motivation through Satisfaction
It is important for us to offer our employees a great working atmosphere from the very beginning, so we can sustainably retain them longer. Satisfied teammates are more motivated to work and are automatically more productive. This intrinsic motivation, which SelectCode and employees have to further develop themselves, is an essential factor for the success of the company. Because what would a software start-up be without employees? - That's right, unemployed.
Especially in the software development industry, the team is the most important resource and should therefore be cultivated.
Transparency Leads to Trust
Mutual appreciation arises from trust on both sides. On one hand, the company trusts that the employee carefully and to the best of their knowledge and belief performs their work. On the other hand, the employee trusts the company that everyone is treated fairly and that attention is paid to one another in crisis situations. To maintain trust among teammates and to gain the associated honesty and understanding, the leadership can ensure more internal transparency. Examples of this include co-deciding on important projects or also disclosing when something goes wrong. Through this honest transparency from the management, employees feel more appreciated, and the trust in the company is strengthened.
Mutual Trust Improves the Feedback Culture
The trust mentioned earlier is especially important when an open feedback culture is practiced within the company. It does no good to hold feedback discussions with project management if you feel that you will be dismissed or looked at askance for the slightest criticism. For this reason, it is crucial to build strong trust to receive honest feedback from team members. They also accept feedback better due to the solid communication base and thus have more intrinsic motivation to improve themselves.
